French Resistance was the first song I wrote for this record. We recorded it at Electric Lady Studios. I wanted to bring levity and perspective to my ruminating feelings about my failures, because I have a tendency to catastrophize. Emma Craft and I had been talking about making a music video together for over a year. I'm so happy she wanted to make something with me because I trust her taste completely and think she's a genius.

about
Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, French Resistance is a self-deprecating satire about the marriage between depression and narcissism. Benjamin’s knack for self-aware humorous lyrics thrive when she contemplates what will become of her when she’s “not pretty anymore.” It is here that Electric Lady’s in-house mixing engineer, John Rooney (who has engineered for major pop-stars, such as Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift) shines. Rooney polishes up the most accessible track of Benjamin’s repertoire, packaging Benjamin’s quirky indie sensibility into a radio-ready pop single. The music video was directed by esteemed fashion photographer, Emma Craft (Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs, Sandy Liang). Sandy Liang, Mirror Palais and Mila Sullivan lent costumes for the shoot.
lyrics
I was confused about the French Resistance
Going on about the ending of Les Mis
We were arguing bout suicide assistance
and I don’t know now why it was relevant
How could anybody ever love me
When all I do is cry and think about myself
I think I’ll write a book about it one day
When I’m not pretty anymore and I can’t convince somebody else
I just want a big piano
A fireplace when I feel sad
I just need someone to tell me
Everything is not so bad
and if this plane goes down tonight just tell ‘em I was true
If I can’t be good at least remember I was blue
and I wanted you
Eat all of the food that’s on the table
Cry at all the movies when they’re done
Tell someone you love them even if you really don’t
It’s nice and everybody needs some
I am tired of the world working against me
and i’m tired of trying to be a star
I think I’ll hang my head on Massachusetts beaches
and finally give up wondering where you are
I just want a big piano
a fireplace when I feel sad
I just need someone to tell me
Everything is not so bad
and if this plane goes down tonight just tell ‘em I was true
If I can’t be good at least remember I was blue
and I wanted you
and I wanted you
and I wanted you
and I wanted you
He’s got his arm around a girl out at the party
and I’m in bed just googling his name
Again again till I memorize the feeling
of the picture when you widen out the frame
Somethings gotta break the habit
Kill the switch when it gets hot
Someone’s gotta kiss my check and
Remember me for what I am not
I just want a big piano
a fireplace when I feel sad
I just need someone to tell me
Everything is not so bad
and if this plane goes down tonight just tell them I was true
If I can’t be good at least remember I was blue
and I wanted you
and I wanted you
and I wanted you
and I wanted you
